    Responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment and rearing facilities for mosquitoes, bed-bugs and flies. Undertook tests and experiments with ticks and mosquitoes.

  • Sébastien Kessler, PhD research student (2009 - 2013)

    PhD thesis "The sugar meal of the African malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae and how deterrent compounds interfere with it: perception mechanisms and physiological implications".

    This study provides an initial understanding of the physiological mechanisms involved in sugar feeding in An. gambiae and shows how some bitter products interfere with it.

  • Charles Chappuis, PhD research student (2008 - 2013)

    PhD thesis "The behaviour of the tsetse fly G. pallidipes (Diptera, Glossinidae): from host-seeking to biting".

    This research showed that temperature acts synergistically with water vapour increments in air in inducing the biting response in tsetse and that palp sensilla housing hygroreceptor cells are involved in the perception of differences in relative humidity.

  • Alexandre Gurba, PhD research student (2009 - 2013)

    PhD thesis on the sensory ecology of a pollination syndrome: the case of the hawkmoth Manduca sexta and Petunia plants.

    The big challenge of this project was the dissection of floral traits defining the pollination syndromes in Petunias. We combined knowledge of Petunia genetics with insights into the sensory physiology and behavioural interactions between the plant and its pollinator. This approach allowed us to investigate the contribution of fragrance in the reproductive isolation in the genus Petunia.

  • Caroline Joris, PhD research student (2008 - 2011)

    PhD thesis on tsetse fly responses to volatile plant compounds.

    This project gained insight into a new set of attractants for tsetse flies (Glossina spp.) and the identification of behavioural and sensorial stimuli by using electrophysiological and behavioural methods.

    PhD thesis on the physiology and behaviour of host-seeking by Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto.
