About the SFM

The Swiss Forum for Migration and Population Studies (SFM) is a research and training institute at the University of Neuchâtel. As part of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences the institute offers a master's degree with a unique specialization in “Migration and Citizenship.”

The SFM was founded in 1995 with the declared aim of contributing pragmatically to discussions of topics relevant to migration. Since then the institute has completed more than 300 studies, most financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) or mandated by various institutions or organizations (Federal, Cantonal, Communal or private organizations).

The SFM is affiliated to the Centre for the Understanding of Social Processes of the University of Neuchâtel (MAPS) and contributes to the advancement of interdisciplinary research on the circulation of people, goods and knowledge.

The SFM actively participates in international research programmes. It directs international research projects and represents Switzerland in various European research networks. Since 2004 the institute has been the Swiss representative in the European research network IMISCOE (imiscoe.org), which coordinates the migration research of 36 world-class institutions.

Since 2014 the SFM director has also been acting as coordinator for the National Center of Competence in Research nccr – on the move (nccr-onthemove.ch), a network of research teams from seven Swiss universities.
