Philipp studied geoecology and received a PhD in forest science. He is trainer for scientific writing and has broad experience both in research and in adult education.

Objectives

The objectives of this workshop are:

  • to understand the publication process in peer-reviewed journals
  • to develop individual strategies for publishing research articles

Content and pre-course assignments

Topics

  • the peer review system: processes and stakeholders
  • criteria for journal selection (e.g. journal reputation, decision time)
  • publishing in open access journals
  • what reviewers do
  • what editors want: reasons for rejection
  • what to do in case of rejection
  • what to do in case of conditional acceptance: responding to comments
  • copyright issues
  • ethical obligations
  • authorship

Preparation
In preparation of this workshop, participants select six journals relevant for their field of research. For each journal, they bring to the workshop information about:

  • aims and scope
  • reputation
  • editors and editorial staff

Registration

  • This course is open to all PhD students, however until 15 October 2018 priority is given to "Interuniversity doctoral program in organismal biology" participants.
  • Post-docs are welcome as long as places are available.
  • This course is free, but the approximate cost is 160 CHF per person. Therefore, a waiting list will be prepared in order to assure that there are no empty seats.
  • Maximum number of participants: 14 people (minimum: 8 people)
