Migration and Mobility
The centre of expertise Migration and mobility unites a wide array of unique competences in Switzerland, thus positioning the University of Neuchâtel as a national and international reference centre in the area of movement of persons, as well as a key interlocutor for political actors. This centre combines the skills of several disciplines.
Our expertise in terms of migration and mobility takes an interdisciplinary approach to all questions related to the understanding of modern society: human mobility, its economic and social grounds, the national and international frameworks that legislate it and its consequences on social and national cohesion. These questions are intrinsically related to the current and future organisation of nation-states and their interconnections with the transnational phenomena of people and economy.
The centre of expertise Migration and mobility has enabled the University of Neuchâtel to coordinate several national and international projects, among which the interuniversity project CUS-PCI “MOVE” for the interdisciplinary study of movement of persons, as well as the CUS-PCI project “Centre for Migration Law” for the legal and social analysis of migrations. The centre also coordinates the project “Support and Opposition to Migration” within the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme for Research (FP7), analysing populist movements in Europe, and – last but not least – takes part in the Swiss Centre of Expertise in Human Rights (SCHR), for which the University of Neuchâtel handles questions of migration and racial discrimination. All of these appointments have made it possible to attribute the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) called “On the Move: The Migration-Mobility Nexus” to the University of Neuchâtel – a clear recognition of the excellence of research in the area of migration and mobility.
