Objectives

To learn about and reflect on the challenges for a sustainable agriculture that provides food security for future generations

During the workshop you will be confronted with the challenges that researchers and policy makers are facing in their efforts to assure food security for future generations in a sustainable manner.

The focus will be on developing countries and the workshop will also be attended by students from the masters module Sustainable Agriculture and by foreign students that participate in the Masters of Advance Studies in Integrated Crop Management (MAS-ICM, in collaboration with CABI, Delemont).

1st day:

Morning: Introduction (explaining CABI's activities in sustainable agriculture and introducing the Plantwise program). MAS-ICM students will present the agricultural challenges in their respective home country. They will present in groups of two (six 15-minute presentations).

Afternoon: Three of the invited experts will present their visions for a sustainable agriculture in presentations of 30 minutes each. There will be 10 min for discussion after each talk.

2nd day:

Morning: The remaining four invited experts will present their visions (30 minutes plus 10 min discussion.
Afternoon: Roundtable discussion with experts and the students (three groups, topics will be chosen during the workshop).

3rd day:

Morning: the students prepare their final presentations in which they address the main challenges and possible solutions (six presentations in total).
Afternoon: the students give their group presentations (six 15-minute presentations) on how sustainable agriculture may be achieved, taking into account what learned during the speakers contributions and discussions.

Venue: University of Neuchâtel, Faculté des sciences, UniMail, Emile-Argand 11. Main talks: building F, Aula Louis-Guillaume (ALG, 2nd floor)

ECTS : 1.5 for PhD students (Scientific activities). For other participants: contact the organisers.

Evaluation: Full attendance and active participation

Registration fee: free for all PhD students of the doctoral programs DP-biol, CUSO E&E and CUSO MPS, and IPM and MAS students, included coffee breaks and lunches. Other participants have to pay 60.00 CHF (in cash) at the registration desk on the first day.

Meals: collective lunches (Cafeteria Microcity, rue de la Maladière 71B) and coffee breaks are offered to students (with the exception of external students). No reimbursement for individual/external meals. Please, do not forget to informa us about your meal preferences or food restrictions at the registration desk on the first morning of the workshop.

Travel expenses: For participants of the Interuniversity doctoral program in organismal biology (DP-biol ): see reimbursement conditions. For participants of the CUSO doctoral programs in Ecology and Evolution and in Molecular Plant Sciences: see CUSO E&E and CUSO MPS web sites

Make sure that you sign the attendance list each and every day and take your certificate of attendance at the end of the course (no attestation will be sent by mail)

This course is open and free to PhD students (DP-biol + CUSO E&E + CUSO MPS), and mandatory to UniNE IPM master students and MAS-ICM students. External prospect participants can register, but priority is given to DP-Biol, CUSO E&E and CUSO MPS PhD students until 6 April 2018.
