Residence permits

Work

  • If you are a non-EU/EFTA student with authorisation for a temporary residence period in order to study - “Séjour temporaire pour études"
    You are only permitted to engage in any additional remunerated activity six months after your studies begin. Once this period has elapsed, you may engage in paid work for no more than 15 hours per week (full time during the summer break), although your employer must still obtain the relevant authorisation for you to work.
     
  • If you are a EU/EFTA student
    You have the right to work no more than 15 hours per week, and full time during the summer break, although your employer must still obtain the relevant authorisation for you to work.

Health insurance

If you have obligatory insurance in your country of origin with the cover equivalent to that stipulated by Swiss law, the Cantonal Health Insurance Office (OCAM) can release you from your obligation to pay for insurance in Switzerland.

Requests for such an exemption must be made to OCAM within three months of your arrival in the canton, and accompanied by an official attestation dated, stamped and signed by your non-Swiss insurance provider. If the attestation provided by your non-Swiss insurer has restrictions placed on it, you will not receive an exemption.
