Ziele der Studie
Die vom Bundesamt für Umwelt (BAFU) in Auftrag gegebene Studie untersucht die wirt-schaftliche und technische Leistungsfähigkeit der schweizerischen Forstbetriebe, bei gleich-zeitiger Berücksichtigung der multifunktionellen Rolle des Waldes. Die gesetzten Ziele bein-halten unter anderem die Schätzung des Niveaus der technischen Effizienz der Forstbetriebe und die Identifizierung der verschiedenen Einflussfaktoren, wie zum Beispiel die öffentlichen Finanzbeiträge, der Eigentumstyp oder das Ausmass der Diversifizierung der Produktion und Dienstleistungen. Zudem wurden versucht eventuelle Skalenerträgen und eine „optimale“ Grösse der Produktionsaktivitäten zu bestimmen. Die Studie trägt ebenfalls zur Beurteilung der Qualität der benutzten Daten für zukünftige Forschungsarbeiten bei. Die Ergebnisse, die mit Hilfe von unterschiedlichen empirischen Ansätzen erzielt wurden, stimmen weitgehend überein.

Objectifs de l’étude
L’étude mandatée par l’Office fédéral de l’environnement (OFEV) examine la performance économique et technique des exploitations forestières suisses en prenant en compte le rôle multifonctionnel de la forêt. Les objectifs fixés comprennent entre autres l’estimation du ni-veau de l’efficacité technique des exploitations forestières et l’identification des différents facteurs d’influence, tels que les contributions financières, le type de propriété ou le degré de diversification de la production et des services. De plus, un effort a été réalisé pour détermi-ner l’existence d’économies d’échelle et la taille «optimale» des opérations forestières. L’étude contribue aussi à l’évaluation de la qualité des données utilisées pour des recherches à venir, en particulier par rapport aux différentes fonctions forestières. Les résultats qui ont été obtenus selon différentes approches empiriques sont dans une large mesure consistants.

Aims of the study
The study mandated by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) examines the economic and productive performance of the Swiss forestry firms taking into account the multi-functional role of the forest. The main objectives of the study include the estimation of the efficiency level of the forestry firms and the identification of the different determinants, such as the financial contributions by public authorities, the type of ownership or the degree of diversification of the production and services. In addition, some effort is deployed to look into the potentials of economies of scales in order to define the “optimal” size of operations. The study also contributes to the assessment of the quality of the data for further research, in particular with respect to different forest functions. Overall, the results of the study are fairly consistent across the different empirical approaches.
