Elements of evolutionary genetics

Objectives

To acquire up-to-date knowledge about the theory of evolutionary genetics.

Content

The topics covered are:

  • genetic variation
  • DNA sequence variability and its measurement
  • types of natural selection and their effects
  • interactions between selection and mutation or migration
  • the description and analysis of variation at multiple sites of the genome
  • genetic drift
  • the effects of spatial structure, and
  • genome evolution

Mode: 10 min presentation of one of the book chapters* followed by discussion

*Book studied: Elements of Evolutionary Genetics by Brian Charlesworth & Deborah Charlesworth, 2010

It is recommended to acquire the book before the first seminar.

General information

Date :  Monday 26 September to 12 December 2011 (exception Tuesday 11 October)

Schedule : 15:30-17:00

Location : University of Neuchâtel, Faculté des sciences, UniMail, building D, room D303

Credit point : 2.0 credit points (Scientific activity). You must follow a minimum of 10 seminars to receive the attestation

Evaluation : Active participation including reading of book chapters (home work as described)

Travel expenses : participants of the doctoral program are eligible for reimbursement of incurred travel expenses by train (half-fare card, and 2nd class). Please send the original tickets (no copies, except for the general abonnement) with the reimbursement form  to Dr. Christiane Bobillier.  No reimbursement for bus, taxi or car travel expenses will be paid.
