Plant interactions with the environment

3-5 September 2008

A  joint workshop with "3ème cycle romand en sciences biologiques" and "Inter-University Doctoral Programme in Ecology and Evolution"

Announcement (PDF document).

Programme (PDF document, updated 28 August 2008)

theme

Interdisciplinary research between the fields of ecological and molecular plant physiology is rapidly revealing a spectacular flexibility and sophistication in the adaptations of plants to their biotic and abiotic environment.  We have invited various top scientists that have contributed to this research and asked them to present their work in a manner that provides non-expert scientists with insight into the latest developments.

The choice of speakers reflects the interdisciplinarity of the field.  Three topics receive particular attention:

1) Induced resistance to abiotic and biotic stressors

2) Mutualistic and symbiotic interactions between plants, insects and micro-organisms

3) Interactions between plants and light

Besides presentations there will be round table discussions supported by key publications on specific topics. Students will also be offered an opportunity to present their own work and will be given ample of opportunity to consult and discuss with the experts.  By bringing together students from different research groups and disciplines we envision to stimulate exchange of information and novel collaborations.

speakers

Chris Bowler, Paris, France: light signalling

Martin Heil (mheil (at) ira.cinvestav.mx), CINVESTAV,  Mexico: plant-insect interactions in nature

Francis Martin, INRA-Nancy, France: tree-microbe interactions

Colin Robinson, Warwick, U.K.: chloroplast biogenesis

Eric Schmelz, USDA-ARS CMAVE, USA: insect-derived elicitors of plant defence

Jurriaan Ton (jurriaan.ton (at) bbsrc.ac.uk), Rothamsted Research, U.K.: the role of plant volatiles in priming for defence
