Experimental Biology

The Experimental Biology Research Group (Head: Dr. Ricardo A. R. Machado) applies the scientific method to answer fundamental and applied questions related to: i) the genes and metabolites that are used by living organisms to interact between them and with their environment, ii) how to improve biocontrol agents, and iii) on the taxonomy and phylogenetic relationships of entomopathogens. Our research system includes plants, herbivores, and herbivore natural enemies such as entomopathogenic nematodes and their associated symbiotic bacteria, and insect predators. By using interdisciplinary approaches, we generate a flow of knowledge that primarily addresses fundamental biological questions, but that, at the same time, can be used to improve agricultural and biotechnological practices.

Our current four lines of research include:

  • Belowground Plant-Herbivore Interactions.
  • Ecology and Evolution of Bacterial Bioluminescence.
  • Entomopathogens as Biological Control Agents.
  • Taxonomy and Phylogenetic Relationships of Photorhabdus Bacteria.

We are always motivated to support students/scientists of all academic levels. If you want to do an internship as part of your bachelor or master program, or if you want to do your thesis with us, do not hesitate to contact us. If you want to apply for funding to conduct your PhD or to do a postdoc, you will receive all our support.
