Introduction to Analytics and Metabolomics - joint with CUSO MPS

fall semester 2020 - TBA

Course in collaboration with the CUSO Molecular Plant Science (MPS) program.

Speaker: Laurent Mène-Saffrané, University of Fribourg

8-10 June 2020

The course has been canceled.

Objectives

This course will provide the participants with the basic concepts on analytics and metabolomics. The course is theoretical and practical.

Content & Program

Mornings: 3 days x 3 hrs lecture "Introduction to analytics and metabolomics". The following topics will be approached:
- Principles of separation - Liquid and gas chromatography
- Principles of detection – Overview of 4 different detectors (DAD, FLD, MS, FID)
- Principles of quantification

Afternoons: 3 days x 4 hrs practical work with the analytical instruments:
- Fatty acid methyl ester analysis by gas chromatography/flame ionization detector
- Tocochromanol analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography/fluorescence
- Data analysis and reporting

Participants are invited to bring vegetable oil that they consumed (0.5 mL in an Eppendorf).
They will be analyzed during the practical part to illustrate the concepts developed during the three seminars.
