Language courses

If you don’t know your level in the target language you wish to learn, the CdL offers you the possibility to test your level of English and German. Information and registration under Placement test (unine.ch)

Each applicant is responsible to register for a course which corresponds to his or her actual level. Course descriptions use the common reference levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) that is divided in six levels from A1 (breakthrough or beginner) to C2 (mastery or proficiency).

You can also use several tools developed by the Council of Europe:
  • Self-assessment grid and checklists downloadable here : English gridEnglish checklist
  • For a more thorough evaluation, you can use the DIALANG software, directly on the Dialang website or on all the computers at the E.M.A
Courses organised by the LC are open to all students and staff of the university: Bachelor's students, Master's students, doctoral students, academic and administrative staff. Members of the SAN can also register in our courses and use the E.M.A.

Our courses are also open to students and academic staff of other institutions in Neuchâtel: EPFL, HE-Arc, HES-SO and members of SAN

The LC provides general language courses but also courses in academic English and German. For students starting a Master's programme in English, we offer an intensive course in English during the spring and summer breaks (February and September)

Finally, the LC offers coaching to prepare for international exams in German and English:

Learners who wish to prepare for these exams at other levels or who would like to prepare for the Cambridge Proficiency Exam (CPE) or the Cambridge Advanced Exam (CAE) can find methods, books and CD-Roms at the E.M.A. Materials for the preparation of the Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera (DELE) are also provided there.

The LC delivers two kinds of certificate:

  • Certificate of achievement

To get a course certificate, students need to regularly attend courses (80% ratio of attendance is required). Moreover, participants have to meet the requirements of the course assessment.

  • Certificate of participation

If a particpant fails part of the course assessment or cannot take a class test, they will get a certificate of participation ONLY if they can prove a 80% ratio of attendance (including the 10 hours of self-study at the E.M.A. for the flexi-courses).

You can register online during the enrolment periods (see below). Look at the course descriptions on each course page.

Applications will be handled on a first come, first served basis. The number of participants is limited to 16 or 20 depending on the course. When this number is reached, your application will be sent on a waiting list.

Classes start on the first day of the semester, even when they take place on a Monday!! Your place in the course will be confirmed by email at the latest the Thursday before the start of the semester.
